Pedestrian zone with bus in Vienna バスが走るウィーンの歩行者天国

Neubaugasse in Vienna has recently been partly refurbished. This street is close to the famous Viennese shopping street Mariahilferstrasse. Mariahilferstrasse some years ago became a pedestrian zone. But on the same street bicycles as well as skateboards etc. are allowed. On some parts even vehicles are allowed to drive slowly. In the beginning I thought that it might not work because to me a pedestrian zone and a vehicle zone must be separated if a street has a certain width. However I still haven’t heard about any accidents or disputes and so it works! Now this equally famous Neubaugasse has recently been refurbished to a similar situation. Neubaugasse in the 7th district in Vienna is quite famous for free spirit and interesting shops. The elevated sidewalk level on the refurbished part was removed and the whole street has been paved as one single level. Flower beds were constructed and now there are seating options provided. Therefore pedestrians as well as cyclists and baby strollers etc. can use the whole street which I find quite comfortable. That is not all however. The bus line 13A is using this street in both directions! That means people and buses must watch out for each other. Somehow I find that this system is a good match for a street which symbolizes free spirit.

ウィーンのノイバウ通り（ノイバウガッセ）の一部が新しく舗装されました。この通りは、買い物の目抜き通りとして有名なマリアヒルフ通りのすぐ近くにあります。マリアヒルフ通り（マリアヒルファーシュトラッセ）は、数年前から歩行者天国となりました。しかし、同じところを自転車やスケートボードなども走れるのです。それだけではなく、一部の区間は自動車もゆっくり走ることが許されています。私は、ある程度広い道は歩道と車道がはっきりと別れていなければならないという固定観念を持っているようで、このようなことが果たしてうまくいくのかどうか、疑いの思いがありました。しかし、事故や問題があったということは未だ聞いたことがなく、うまくいっているらしいのです。ノイバウ通りも似たような感じに改装されました。ウィーン7区にあるノイバウ通りは、自由な雰囲気と魅力のあるお店があることで有名です。歩道とかつての車道を区切っていた段は取り除かれ、通り全体が平になりました。花壇やベンチも新しく設置されました。歩行者、自転車、乳母車など、道をひろびろと通ることができて気持ちいいです。しかし、それだけではありません。13Aのバスも往来するのです！利用者とバスは、お互いに注意を払って譲り合わないといけないのです。これは、自由な精神を誇るこの通りにふさわしいシステムと言えるかもしれません。
