Today is Easter Monday. Since Austria is a predominantly Catholic country, today should be a day of family gatherings and celebrations. But now there are anti-Covid restrictions in place and so one household can only receive one person from another household. I think this is hard for those wanting to celebrate this time.
The rabbits in the picture above I bought at a shop in Vienna some time ago. They are toys from Japan and were sold in the childrens’ books department. Even though I am Japanese I had not previously known that product and I find them really cute. I use them to make an Easter decoration together with eggs. When Easter is over, they return to their nest in a box and will be waiting for the next Easter holidays. Hopefully next year it will be possible to have proper celebrations with families united.

In Austria right there is a TV spot “1, 2, 3”. This spot is to raise awareness about the Covid situation. 1 is wearing a mask. 2 is keeping a distance of two metres to others. And 3 means getting tested every three days.
Whiskey relaxing exactly on my bag 私のバッグの上でくつろぐウイスキー
Last night I had a strange dream of a cat. My husband and I sometimes take care of seven cats from a family we are friends with. One of those is “Whiskey”. Some years ago we saw him at the window when we passed by. Even though there are several cats living there, only he came to us when we called. Because we never gave him any food at the window, we thought that it must be friendship. All cats living there are former stray cats and it could be said that that apartment is a kind of cat asylum. This family also gave some cats to other people and maybe thereby Whiskey thought we could adopt him. The owner also said we could adopt Whiskey but unfortunately my husband has strong cat allergy and so we cannot have any.
Yesterday I dreamt of “Whiskey”. In that dream there was a party at that apartment. The owner family, many friends and both of us were there. I do not know why but I held Whiskey in my arms wrapped in a blanket. Actually it is really difficult to hold him because this place is a kind of asylum and the pets do not have a very strong relationship with owners and so being held by someone is very unusual for him. In my arms inside the blanket he was peaceful and still almost like a doll. His eyes were milky white and strange. My husband and I said goodbye to the family and returned to our place with Whiskey. I cleaned his eyes and the usual Whiskey colour returned which made us happy. I woke up with the joyful feeling of a cat being in the home.
And then today afternoon we received a message from Whiskey’s owner and surprisingly they went to see a veterinarian doctor with him. Recently he lost some weight and they were somewaht worried about that. Thankfully the checkup did not reveal any reason for worrying. When I got that message I had to associate it with my dream and that really surprised me. Since he was doing better in the dream and also doing ok in reality, our joy was double. I could not stop thinkng that there really are inexplicable things.
Soon there will be Easter holidays when they will go to the countryside again and we will again be able to take care of those cats. I am looking forward to it!

I miss meeting friends at coffe houses in Vienna. The last time was at the end of December 2019. That day at this very coffee house in the picture I met a colleague from Vienna Conservatory. We studied opera together and after that lost contact for many years. After some time however she contacted me and we met s couple of times at this place to chat. That day in December she told me that she would like to sing together in a concert with me and my husband. I was very happy and accepted the offer. Also that day we spoke about “A new virus”. She was well informed and spoke about her fears, I on the other hand was quite optimistic and did not at all believe that it could turn into a global pandemic. She was right and sadly the situation turned worse and worse and Austria was placed under lockdown. There were also times when lockdown was lifted but because I was somewhat afraid I had no mood to go to either a restaurant or a coffee house. Right now Vienna still has restrictions. Gastronomy is all closed except for take out. It is also still a difficult time for all events. The last concert I went to was in February 2020. The outlook for the concert together with my friend is still to this day very unknown.
Viennese coffe houses have their own distinct tradition. I love to be at one of those places. Some time ago I wrote for “Kochi Shinbun” an article about Viennese coffee houses and I would like to attach it here (Only in Japanese unfortunately but I hope to translate it in the future).
Today, February 25th, in Vienna the weather was very nice and also the temperature has risen considerably. In this good mood I went again to get an antigen test. The result is negative! With this proof of testing tomorrow I can, after a very long time, go to a rehearsal again. How I have waited for this! I also got a new haircut and with a cheerful heart I will surely have a good rehearsal.

After a long period of thought I have decided to get a haircut. Starting some years ago, I always went to hairdressers in Japan. Here in Vienna there are of course good hairdressers but unfortunately the chemicals for permed hair are not good for my hair. No matter how well local hairdressers cut and take care, due to the locally available chemicals my hair always looks like after an explosion. This time because of Covid19 I haven’t had a chance of returning to Japan for a long time. The last time I went to a hairdresser in Japan was in September 2019. I cannot take it anymore! Getting a perm I will do next time in Japan, this time I will only get a cut. My appointment is set for tomorrow, oh how I look forward to it! Now because of Covid19 one needs a proof of testing with a negative result. That is why today I went to a large testing locations to get tested. Negative! Thank god. I can get a haircut tomorrow…
Starting February 8th in Austria there has been some easing of restrictions. But still, restaurants, hotels and event locations remain closed. Now the situation is being confronted by many more testings. There are compulsory antigen tests for workplaces and schools. Some locations such as hairdressers are open and require a proof of testing no older than 48 hours to enter. It is wonderful that everyone can get tested easily. There have been some large locations providing mass testings and recently even pharmacies offer that service. Now there are even locations that offer testing without a health insurance card. The picture above shows such a location on Mariahilferstrasse. All antigen tests are free of charge. There is also a plan that every person will be able to receive 5 free tests a month to perform at home. The government’s slogan now is “Testing, testing, testing!”. I think it is a good method. Since the start of the Covid pandemic, the total number of tests (PCR and antigen combined) for the whole country is 13.420.960 and the total for Vienna is 2.884.696 (official government statistic from February 22nd, 2021)
February 16th, 2021 around 9:30 PM in Vienna 2月16日夜9時半頃のウイーン市内
Today (February 16th) around 2 AM I woke up and noticed that it was rather bright outside. I thought it was strange because yesterday evening during a walk I saw the crescent moon in the Western sky, which should have already sunk below the horizon. Its light was rather weak and could not illuminate the earth like a full moon. I can only assume that it is white outside, it is snowing! I got up and opened the curtain to look outside. It was in fact snowing a little bit but there was not a lot covering the ground. What I found strange was that the sky appeared white. Evene though it was the middle of the night, the buildings around were clearly visible. I imagine white nights to be similar to this. Those of course happen in Summer at much more Northern latitudes than here in Vienna if we talk about the Northern hemisphere. I forgot that I was only wearing a pyjama and barefeet and without noticing it I was looking outside for a while. Maybe there were some similar bright nights before then but here in the city there is only a small part of the sky visible between buildings and maybe until now I haven’t properly looked at it. To me it appears that the sky has its belly full of snow kids hanging down low and the white colour is reflecting the city lights… I do not know. Somehow it seems strange to me.
